The glaucoma division within UT Southwestern's department of ophthalmology specializes in helping patients with this devasting condition. Led by Drs. Karanjit Kooner and Jess Whitson, patients receive individualized, leading-edge treatment that stops the progression of this potentially blinding condition.

Current research conducted into the causes of and treatment for glaucoma includes:

  • Risk factors for blindness in glaucoma
  • Role of central corneal thickness (CCT) in glaucoma
  • Nerve fiber layer analysis and prediction of glaucoma
  • New medicines for treatment and the side effects of existing glaucoma medications
  • Patient non-adherence to medications
  • Safety and efficacy of medical therapy in childhood glaucoma
  • New surgical techniques for treatment, such as the Express Glaucoma Shunt
  • Role of laser surgery (selective laser trabeculoplasty) in glaucoma management

Unique within the United States, the division has created the Dallas Glaucoma Patient Database. This project follows all patients treated by the glaucoma division in order to establish long-term trends and demographic data about people with this disease.

Anyone interested in learning more about glaucoma research at UT Southwestern should contact Dr. Karanjit Kooner or Dr. Jess Whitson at glacuoma@utsouthwestern.edu.
