Preceptors:

  • Karanjit S. Kooner, M.D., M.B.A.
  • Martin Wax, M.D.
  • Jess T. Whitson, M.D.
  • Nalini Aggarwal, M.D.

Duration of Fellowship: One (1) year.

Goal: The goal of the glaucoma fellowship program is to provide graduates of accredited residency programs with extensive exposure to the medical and surgical management of difficult glaucoma problems.  Preference will be given to those applicants who are considering a career in academic ophthalmology.

Description of Program: The fellow will spend equal time among the four preceptors who have busy private practices. The hospitals associated with the program are Zale Lipshy University Hospital, St. Paul University Hospital, Parkland Memorial Hospital, Children's Medical Center Dallas, and the Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Parkland Eye Clinic sees an average of 120 to 150 patients per day.  Of these, the residents do all of the general ophthalmic workups, with the exception of the glaucoma clinic which is one-half day per week.  If there are any glaucoma problems, the fellow is expected to be available to assist the residents.  Support is also available from the faculty and the chief resident.

Private clinics generally see around 25 to 30 patients per half-day.  The fellow will have the opportunity to participate fully in the management of patients.  There is ample hands-on training in the latest surgical techniques; the surgical workload is such that the fellow will have completed approximately 100 cases as primary surgeon and another 200 cases as assistant over the year.  The clinics have state-of-the-art equipment and excellent ancillary support.  Research projects are encouraged.

Research Opportunity: At any one time there are a large number of clinical research trials ongoing in which the fellows are involved.  In-depth involvement in one or more trials by the fellow is encouraged.  Additionally, there are five basic scientists in the department with research interests in the anterior segment of the eye.  Each has a fully equipped lab with ongoing research projects in which the fellows are encouraged to be active.

Stipend: Fellows are paid at the PGY-5 level.

Licensure Requirements: A Texas medical license is required and must be obtained prior to starting the Fellowship.

Appointment: Prospective Glaucoma Fellows are required to sign a Memorandum of Appointment, which contains a restrictive covenant.  For further information on the restrictive covenant, please contact the Education Office for the Department of Ophthalmology at 214-648-3848.

Application Process:  Questions may be directed to the Education Office at UT Southwestern Medical Center, 5323 Harry Hines Blvd., Dallas, TX, 75390-9057; phone 214-648-3848; email OphthEdu@UTSouthwestern.edu. Personal, on-site interviews are required.  The University of Texas is an equal opportunity employer.  Those with diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.  An Ophthalmology Fellowship Application to our program is available by clicking on the above link.  Completed applications must be mailed to the address listed.  This fellowship participates in the Ophthalmology Fellowship Matching program. You must register on-line at www.sfmatch.org, where you will also find application forms for the match program.

One position is offered annually. The deadline for completion of application is September 1 of the third year of residency, but earlier completion is encouraged.
