Hematology Conference - Lectures and case discussions dealing with benign and malignant hematological topics; this forum also serves to review issues in a number of hematology-related areas such as blood banking and cytogenetics. Hematology/Pathology Conference - Faculty and fellows of Hem/Onc and Pathology meet for lectures and case discussions. Divisional Conference - Faculty and fellows gather for lunch and discussion of various clinical problems, oncology protocols, journal review, or research update. This conference provides an opportunity for informal contact between trainee and faculty. Hematology/Oncology Multi-Modality Conference - All members and disciplines of Hem/Onc participate in the presentation of ongoing neoplasm-related patient problems. Cases are presented together with review of pertinent pathology and radiology information and a discussion focused on specific issues ensues. The success of this conference pivots on the trainee's participation in conjunction with faculty supervision. It serves as an excellent means of communication among all the health-care delivery disciplines. In addition to fundamental teaching, the goal of this conference is to emphasize the need for an open discussion forum between many physicians from a variety of specialized disciplines in the optimal management of the patient with cancer. Thoracic Malignancy Conference - Because of the particular research interest of Hematology/Oncology in lung cancer, this multimodality conference deals primarily with patients with lung malignancies. Breast Research Conference - Attending faculty of Hem/Onc review potential patients for clinical trials. In addition to these weekly Hem/Onc activities, the V.A. Hospital and some subspecialty groups (including ENT, obstetrics and gynecology, neuro-oncology) conduct their own weekly "tumor boards" which are attended by members of radiation oncology, surgery, and medical oncology.
