Definition:
Also known as fainting and "passing out", syncope is an abrupt, yet temporary loss of consciousness due to a fall in blood pressure. Causes include stress, pain, dehydration, exhaustion, sweating, heart disorders, metabolic disorders, and lung disorders.
Symptoms:
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Headache
- Abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmias)
- Hypotension
- Numbness
- Blurry vision
- Confusion
- Difficulty speaking
- Loss of movement
Diagnosis:
Treatment:
- Roll onto back and keep airway open
- Raise legs above head and loosen up clothing
- Initiate CPR if breathing and pulse weak or not present
