Jo Ann CarsonThe laboratory of Dr. Carson focuses on development and evaluation of innovative nutrition educational strategies. Current endeavors center on development of means of effectively integrating nutrition education within the training of physicians. These strategies include computer-based cases available to students through the World Wide Web, pocket references, as well as more traditional classroom discussions. The Computer Assisted Instruction incorporates use of File Maker Pro, Macromedia's Authorware and Dreamweaver.

The research methodologies utilized to assess the impact of nutrition education strategies include:

  • knowledge tests
  • attitude scales
  • self-efficacy scales
  • objective structured clinical exams to measure student skills
  • chart audits to document student or physician patient care practices

In addition to contributions from other Center for Human Nutrition faculty, components of this work include collaboration with:

  • Lynne Kirk, MD, Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education
  • Shalini Reddy, MD, Assistant Professor, Internal Medicine
  • Susan Cox, MD, Associate Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Paul Kraweitz, PhD, Assistant Professor, Office of Medical Education
  • Claudia Barner, PhD, RD, LD, Consultant
  • M. Beth Gillham, PhD, RD, LD, Associate Professor, Department of Human Ecology, University of Texas at Austin
