The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (CCBD) at Children's Medical Center Dallas is one of the largest pediatric hematology-oncology programs in the United States.  Through its tight linkage with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, the CCBD is internationally known as a center of excellence in patient care, education, clinical and laboratory research, and patient advocacy.

The CCBD is a member of the Children's Oncology Group (COG) and is an active participant in the COG Phase I consortium. The CCBD also supports and encourages the development of divisional clinical research studies in oncology and hematology, and is currently enrolling patients on local investigator-initiated oncology studies. Among these local studies are a pharmacokinetic and Phase II study of oral cyclophosphamide and oral topotecan in children with recurrent and/or refractory solid tumors.

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and the CCBD have, since 2003, been one of only ten National Comprehensive Sickle Cell Centers.  Accompanying this designation is a multi-million dollar grant that supports the basic science and clinical research being done at the CCBD for children with sickle cell disease.

The CCBD is the site of our general hematology-oncology outpatient services and sub-specialty clinics in stem cell transplant, neuro-oncology, orthopedic oncology, and hemostasis.  A multidisciplinary approach is used in the CCBD to plan and deliver clinical care that is targeted to meet the needs of each child.  Among the services offered are childlife, social work, child psychiatry, nutritional support, pastoral care, physical and occupational therapy and prosthetics services. The outpatient clinics are fully staffed by experienced nurses and nurse practitioners and all the clinic days have defined doctor-nurse teams to care for new and established patients. Fellows work with a primary nurse and encouraged to assume a leadership role in their clinic.

The CCBD also offers autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplant services for patients with hematologic and oncologic disorders and performs transplants from unrelated donors facilitated through the National Marrow Donor Program.
