The Pediatric Pathology Fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Children's Medical Center of Dallas is a 1 or 2 year program that prepares a pathologist for a career in the subspecialty of Pediatric Pathology. Applicants must have completed at least 3 years of AP training or 4 years of AP/CP training in an ACGME accredited program or its equivalent. An interview is required. Applications must be received by September 1 of the year proceeding the expected date of matriculation. Interviews must be completed by December 1.
The program is centered at Children's Medical Center, Dallas, a 345 bed, private, tertiary care pediatric hospital that is the pediatric teaching hospital for the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. 17,229 inpatient admissions and 198,079 outpatient visits occurred in 2003. There were 10,633 day surgery visits.
Approximately 9000 surgical pathology specimens, including bone marrows, placentas and non-gynecologic cytology specimens, were examined in 2003. 143 autopsies, including fetal and neonatal cases, were performed at Children’s and Parkland Memorial Hospital. Parkland is a large county hospital contiguous with Children’s Medical Center. Over 16,000 deliveries occur here each year, the source of abundant perinatal material. State of the art Flow Cytometry and an outstanding Cytogenetics Laboratory reside within the Department of Pathology at the Medical School and are readily accessible to the fellow. The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office is located on the campus with easy access from Children’s. There is a close working relationship between the pediatric pathology department and other clinical departments of the hospital, most of whom have strong residency and/or fellowship programs of their own. The pediatric pathology fellow serves as a formal or informal clinical consultant to these various clinical services throughout the year. The fellow also serves as a consultant to and teacher of pathology residents who rotate on the pediatric pathology service.
The department maintains a large library of current texts pertinent to pediatric pathology. In addition, the fellow has ready access to the libraries of each of the 6 staff pediatric pathologists. The UT Southwestern Medical School Library is only 5 minutes away and most journals can be accessed online from Children's Medical Center. A teaching set of glass slides accompanied by brief clinical histories is located in the pediatric pathology department and covers all areas of pediatric pathology and hematopathology. The collection currently encompasses over 600 cases. A complete set of congenital heart disease videotapes (van Praagh) is available to the fellow. The department maintains a kodachrome collection and electronic database of autopsy and surgical material arranged by accession number.
An institutional permit from Children’s Medical Center is required unless the fellow has a license to practice medicine in the State of Texas. The fellow will be provided with health insurance through Children’s Medical Center. A book fund and malpractice insurance are provided through the Department of Pathology at UT Southwestern Medical School.
