Meals

On Campus The UT Southwestern cafeteria serves a variety of hot meals, sandwiches, grilled foods, salads, fruits, and beverages.  Breakfast and lunch are served from 7:15AM to 4PM. Dinner is not served.  Several vendors offer a variety of specialty foods including Subway, Taco Bell, Italian, Chinese, Japanese Sushi, continental and low-fat options.

The cafeteria at Parkland Hospital serves breakfast from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., lunch from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  Other places to eat on campus include McDonald's (grilled "fast" foods) in Parkland Hospital, the Children's Medical Center Cafeteria and the Zale-Lipshy University Hospital Cafeteria.

Where to Buy Food

In the U.S., food is generally purchased at large supermarkets, rather than at neighborhood grocery stores or food markets.  In addition to food, supermarkets sell a variety of household and personal care items, and many also have pharmacies.  Supermarkets are conveniently located in most residential areas and include:

You may not find foods from your country in a supermarket, but they may be available in a specialty food store.  Refer to the Yellow Pages directory under "Grocers--Retail" for information on international grocery stores, or ask other visitors from your country.

Farm-fresh produce (vegetables/fruits), flowers, and plants are available at the Dallas Farmer's Market located in the southeast corner of downtown Dallas, between Central Expressway and Harwood Street.  The market is open seven (7) days a week.  In the summer and early fall, farms along the rural routes surrounding the Metroplex also sell directly to the public.

Alcoholic Beverages

There are numerous "dry" areas in Dallas.  In a dry precinct, alcoholic beverages cannot be sold in stores, and restaurants may serve them only to patrons who purchase a "membership card" for which identification (a Texas drivers license) is usually required.

You must be at least 21 years old to purchase or consume alcoholic beverages in Texas; this includes beer and wine.  Alcohol consumption is prohibited in city and state parks.
