Day Care for Children of Pre-School Age The State Department of Public Welfare is the licensing agency for day nurseries and kindergartens; it maintains a complete list of approved facilities in the area. Call Day Care Licensing at 214-951-7902 for more information. Enrolling Your Children in School Texas law requires that a child between the ages of six and seventeen attend school. To enroll in a public school, a child must: 1) be at least five years of age on or before September 1, 2) have a birth certificate, 3) be immunized against polio, mumps, rubella, pertussis, tetanus, and diphtheria, and 4) have a copy of previous school records. A letter of introduction from a former teacher may be helpful. Public schools teach kindergarten through 12th grade. A high school diploma is awarded upon successful completion of the 12th grade.
