Internal Medicine Residency: Regulations and Work Hours

The PHHS, DVAMC, SPUH, and Zale ward and unit schedules are designed to provide outstanding patient care and clinical education, while adhering to the duty-hour requirements set forth by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

These requirements include the following:

  • Residents may not work more than 80 hours per week

  • Residents may not work more than 30 hours (24 hours patient care 6 hours didactics) consecutively in the hospital

  • Residents should have at least 10 hours off between hospital shifts

  • Residents must have at least one 24-hour period off per week (out of the hospital and free of clinical duties)
