The Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center is a Deans' Committee Hospital that is located approximately twenty minutes' drive from Parkland. The DVAMC operates 216 internal medicine beds, including a 28-bed pulmonary service and an MICU/CCU with 16 beds. In addition to active outpatient clinics in all subspecialties, there is a large facility for chronic outpatient hemodialysis. The hospital serves the populous North Texas area, including Dallas and Forth Worth, so many patients with acute

problems present to the facility. Moreover, a number of small VA hospitals and outlying community hospitals refer patients to the DVAMC for the diagnosis and treatment of complicated and unusual problems.
The admitting organization and numbers are similar to those at Parkland, with the exception that all DVAMC ward teams have two interns. The Pulmonary and CCU services are conducted in the same manner as at Parkland. The intern has the major responsibility for patient care, with the continuing help of the resident. The attending physicians are full-time faculty members, including more than thirty based at the DVAMC as well as others from the medical school.
Teaching rounds and morning report are conducted daily during the week. In addition, a Clinicopathologic Conference is held each Monday; the Clinical Noon Conference (a didactic lecture from a faculty member duplicating the previous day's talk at Parkland) is given each Tuesday; Intern Chart Conference and resident journal club are held each Wednesday; Grand Rounds is televised from UT Southwestern each Thursday and is followed by Residents' Journal Club; and the extremely popular Potpourri session of interesting cases meets each Friday.
