The Endocrinology and Metabolism Division at UT Southwestern enjoys a rich tradition of excellence in scholarship, in clinical practice, and in the application of new knowledge to improve the health of people. At Southwestern you will have the opportunity to work and learn alongside outstanding physicians and great scholars. We welcome your interest and hope that you will take the opportunity to learn about our program and to visit us in person.
What We Value
We work to meet the highest traditional standards of professionalism. The first of these is honesty--with ourselves, with our colleagues, and with the persons who seek our help. There is no value more fundamental to our work as physicians or our participation in the community of scholars than simple honesty. Second, we place high value on integrity, not only as a personal trait, but also as a "social virtue" which dictates that a person honestly represent their best judgments, while respecting those of others. Our third professional standard is compassion--the noblest ideal of motivation for the work of the physician. Intellectual satisfaction, personal fame, and monetary enrichment are among many factors that can give incentive to our work, but genuine concern for others can illuminate the physician's life when other motivations disappear.
We strive to meet the highest standards of rigorous scholarship. We seek to generate new knowledge and to apply it for the benefit of human health. This entails the acquisition of broad and deep knowledge of the field, but also requires that we maintain an atmosphere that emphasizes creativity and innovation. We welcome new ideas-- and their rigorous analysis.
We place high value on our diversity and collegiality. The intellectual life is greatly enriched by exposure to new viewpoints and the challenges that result from rational discourse. Collegial participation in this community of scholar demands that all function as both teachers and learners.
What You Should Expect
Your experience at Southwestern will provide comprehensive and rigorous clinical training in Endocrinology and Metabolism leading to ABIM subspecialty certification. This clinical training is pursued intensely in the first year, while continuity clinics and other specialized training experiences take place through all three years of the program. In the second and third years of training we provide in-depth training in a research discipline in the area of your choosing. The process of selection of your research mentor begins in the first year of training, as you gain exposure to areas of active inquiry and begin to refine your own particular interests. All the faculty work to assist you in selecting your project and mentor. We intend for your research experience to provide solid preparation for a career in academic endocrinology. This includes attendance and presentation of your work at national meetings, and publication of your work in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals.
You should expect open access to all faculty members--in a training environment where all of us are learners. You should expect an honest and constructive evaluation of your work and solid career guidance. You should expect to work very hard and to have fun.
