Regenerative medicine is the central focus of research in my laboratory. We are studying the self-renewal and differentiation properties of embryonic and adult stem cells.
Stem cell transplants and muscular dystrophy
We are investigating the therapeutic potential of stem cells to treat muscular dystrophies with a special interest in the autosomal dominant FSHD (facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy). We are currently testing a variety of stem cells (embryonic stem cells, umbilical cord blood stem cells, and adult bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells) for muscle differentiation potential, with a view towards developing a muscle regenerative therapy from the most appropriate source.
Hematopoietic and vascular development from hemangioblast precursors
The close association between endothelial cells and primitive hematopoietic precursors in the embryonic yolk sac, in addition to the fact that these precursors share several critical regulatory genes and antigenic markers suggest a common progenitor for both lineages (the hemangioblast). We are identifying and characterizing novel genes involved in embryonic hemangioblast development.
