The Clinical Research Office purpose is to aid private practitioners. The office is designed to help find investigational options for those patients who may benefit from a promising new therapy and for those who have exhausted conventional therapies. In all clinical trials at Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, the primary objective is that patients receive the treatment advances they seek, with better therapeutic results and fewer side effects than with conventional treatments. Frequently patients volunteering as test subjects in clinical trials receive these improved therapies years before they become available to the general public and often at no cost to them as study participants.
At UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, many safeguards are in place to ensure patient safety and protect patient rights. An Institutional Review Board (IRB) oversees all research involving human subjects at the various medical center institutions, including UT Southwestern Medical Center, Children's Medical Center, Parkland Memorial Hospital, St. Paul University Hospital, Zale Lipshy University Hospital, and their affiliated clinics.
