New CT LightSpeed Scanner

UT Southwestern is very pleased to announce the addition of a new GE Lightspeed CT Scanner. The new CT Scanner became operational June 10, 2004, and is the first in the southwest region. The new CT Scanner is located in Aston Radiology.

The new CT Scanner provides clinicians with a unique feature called variable speed scanning, which offers greater flexibility to customize patient procedures and perform new types of exams. Higher-speed scanning allows clearer, sharper images with fewer artifacts caused by patient movement.

Variable speed scanning can capture fast moving images of the heart for cardiovascular studies, when combined with new acquisition techniques. This allows imaging the patient with a variety of heart rates, giving clinicians more control to meet a specific clinical need.   This new frontier in imaging allows for superb sub-millimeter isotropic resolution that facilitates the imaging of small structures including small tortuous vessels, fine bony structures, and coronary arteries. Heart images are captured in a single breath-hold. Better cross sectional displays and 3D images are obtained. The features also allow full applications to assist in examination of the head, abdomen, spine, and chest.

CT Lightspeed Procedures:

  • Cardiac and coronary vessel analysis
  • Coronary artery calcification scoring
  • Angiography studies (Circle of Willis, Carotid Arteries, Aortic angiograms)
  • Stroke assessment
  • Inner ear ailments
  • Spinal injuries
  • Lung exams (Pulmonary angiograms, peripheral runoff angiograms, lung nodule assessment and growth)

All routine CT exams will be able to be accomplished with routine thin slice data, reconstructed quickly and available for immediate review. The exams will be accomplished in a short period of time, increasing patient comfort.

Patient radiation dosage may be reduced due to automated dose reduction features. Additionally, less time is needed for patient breath-holds, resulting in less stress to the patient and better image quality. Patient scan time will be faster.
