Preparing for a Colonoscopy

 Day One

 Day Two

LOW RESIDUE DIET

List of Foods You Can Eat:

  • All milks or milk-based products
  • Well-cooked vegetables (potatoes and tomatoes without skins)
  • Canned or cooked fruit
  • White bread, crackers
  • Eggs
  • Boiled, baked or broiled chicken, beef, fish or pork
  • Ice cream, sherbet, cake or pie without seeds, nuts, raisins or coconut

Foods to Avoid:

  • Raw or deep fried vegetables
  • Fried meats, chicken, or fish
  • Cold cuts, salami, sausage
  • Dried peas and beans
  • Skins, seeds and corn
  • Raw fruits
  • All nuts
  • Any product that contains whole grain or bran (breads, cereals crackers)
  • Tough, cured, BBQ or pickled meats
  • Any desserts with seeds, nuts, raisins or coconut
    Popcorn

 

CLEAR LIQUID DIET

*The day before the examination, the patient
should eat a clear liquid lunch and dinner.

Fluids You Can Drink:

  • Sodas (7-UP, Sprite, Orange Soda, Cola)
  • Gatorade or Powerade
  • Apple, cranberry or white grape juice
  • Ice Tea
  • Black coffee, plain tea
  • Clear soups (i.e. bouillon)

Fluids to Avoid:

  • Milk, chocolate milk or cream
  • Orange juice
  • Tomato juice

At 7:00 p.m., drink one (1) bottle of cold citrate of magnesia.

At 9:00 p.m., take four (4) Dulcolax tablets with four   (4) 8 ounce glasses of water.

NPO (Nothing to eat or drink) after midnight.

Drink as much water or liquids as possible on this day

 

Day of the Examination

At 6:00 a.m., on the day of the examination, one (1) dulcolax suppository should be inserted into the rectum.
Magnesium citrate, Dulcolax suppositories and Dulcolax tablets can be obtained at any drugstore without a prescription.
Diabetic patients should not take their morning insulin. Diabetic patients should be scheduled as early as possible
