Approval Date:__3/13/08____                                                                       1 of 1

PI Eligibility and Responsibilities

Rationale:

This policy defines who is eligible to serve as a Principal Investigator (PI) on a UT Southwestern IACUC protocol.  The type of relationship an individual has with UT Southwestern determines whether they may serve independently as a PI on their own protocol.

Definition:

UT Southwestern Faculty is defined as any individual holding the position of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, or Instructor.

Policy:

  • UT Southwestern Faculty and ARC Veterinarians may serve as PI on UT Southwestern IACUC protocols.

Applicability:

This policy applies to all Principal Investigators on UT Southwestern IACUC protocols.

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the PI are:

  • To conduct the scientific and scholarly work in a manner that adheres to all applicable federal, state, local and university requirements;
  • To acknowledge and accept responsibility for protecting the welfare of animal research subjects;
  • To comply with all requirements of the UT Southwestern IACUC; and
  • To ensure that all staff listed on approved protocols are trained and competent to perform their assigned procedures described in the protocol.

Exceptions:

The Institutional Official can, on a study-by-study basis, grant PI status to an individual who does not meet the criteria above.
