Five-Day Review of Protocols
Rationale:
The IACUC may allow in situations where there is a legitimate need, a five-day review of animal protocols.
Policy:
- The IACUC will allow a five-day review between meeting cycles if the following conditions are met.
- The protocol does not include dogs, cats, pigs, sheep, or goats.
- The protocol does not include survival surgeries.
- The protocol does not include procedures that would cause unalleviated pain and distress to the animals.
- The IACUC Chair or Vice-Chair approves the use of the five day review method.
- The PI submits an IDR to the IACUC office for $100.00. The $100.00 fee cannot be paid for with federally awarded funds.
Applicability:
This policy applies to any protocols reviewed in the five-day review format.
Instructions:
To submit a protocol for five day review, first contact the IACUC manager at 5-6420. The IACUC manager will contact the IACUC Chair or Vice-Chair for permission. If permission is granted, you will be asked to submit an IDR for $100.00 payable to the IACUC; an electronic copy of your protocol through eSirius; and a signature page signed by the principal investigator (PI), the PI’s department chair, and any co-investigators.
The IACUC will have five working days to review the protocol and decide whether to permit the five-day review method. If there are no objections at the end of the five-day period, the protocol will be reviewed by the Chair, the Vice-Chair, or a veterinary member of the IACUC. A letter will be sent to the PI advising of a decision to approve, return for revisions, or defer. If any IACUC member objects during the five-day time period, the protocol will be held over for review at the next convened IACUC meeting. The $100.00 fee is not refundable.
Exceptions:
Exceptions to this policy may be granted by the IACUC Chair or Vice-Chair.
