Humane Animal Care and Use Class
This class (or its on-line equivalent) is mandatory for all investigators, fellows, students, and technicians who work with research animals. To complete the on-line equivalent class, please contact the IACUC Office at 5-6423 for the password and instructions or click HERE. This class is required for anyone who will be added to an IACUC approved protocol.
This class informs personnel of policies, regulations, and standards relating to the care and use of laboratory animals.

Pathogen Control Procedures Class
(formerly known as the North Campus / Y2 Barrier Class)
This class is mandatory for all new investigators, fellows, students, and technicians who will be entering or working in animal facilities on the North or South campus. This class is required for anyone requesting badge or key access to an animal facility on North or South campus.
Investigators, fellows, students, and technicians who have been employed at UT Southwestern prior to February 1, 2006, who will be entering or working in animal facilities on the North campus or in the Y2 Barrier for the first time must take this class.
This class discusses general policies for animal use in locations on North and South campus. Personnel protective equipment required for animal room entry is defined, prevention of infections in rodent colonies is discussed, and transportation policies are defined.

This class is mandatory for all investigators, fellows, students, and technicians who will work with research animals in the NG Vivarium. It is also mandatory for anyone requesting badge or key access into the NG Vivarium.
This class discusses general policies for animal use in the NG Vivarium. Personnel protective equipment required for animal room entry is defined and procedures specific to the NG Vivarium are discussed.

This class is mandatory for all investigators, fellows, students, and technicians who have no prior training handling mice in a research setting unless they have been trained by their principal investigator or senior lab member and have this training documented with the IACUC office.
This class teaches the basics of handling mice for various experimental procedures. Methods of mouse handling and restraint are demonstrated. Anesthesia, analgesia, and euthanasia agents are briefly described. Various injection methods, oral administration methods, and blood collection methods are demonstrated.

Aseptic Rodent Surgery Class
This class is mandatory for all investigators, fellows, students, and technicians who have little or no experience performing aseptic surgery in rodents.
This class teaches aseptic surgical technique in rodents. Preparation for surgery is discussed, including anesthesia selection, general planning, and animal and instrument preparation. Sterile gloving, draping, and maintenance of a sterile surgical field are demonstrated. Instrument maintenance and surgical record keeping is also described. Intra-operative and post-operative monitoring is discussed.

Mouse Breeding Basics Class
This class is an optional information session designed for those who have a role in managing or working with mouse breeding colonies.
Breeding strategies, optimizing mouse breeding, and trouble shooting mouse breeding problems will be discussed.
