CLINICAL BASE YEAR (PGY-1)

The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management offers 15 categorical four year residency positions.  Our training positions consist of an internship year followed by three consecutive years of anesthesiology.  The internship year will include rotations at Parkland Memorial Hospital, Methodist Hospital, and Baylor University Medical Center, all located in Dallas.  Four months will be spent at each.

CLINICAL ANESTHESIOLOGY YEARS
(CA-1 through CA-3)

CA-1 (PGY-2)

The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management also offers positions at the CA-1 level.  The number of positions varies from year to year.  The first year is a time to develop basic anesthesiology skills and knowledge. CA-1 residents rotate through Parkland Memorial Hospital (general operating room, obstetric anesthesiology, and acute pain services), Zale Lipshy University Hospital, St. Paul University Hospital, and the Dallas VA (general operating room and ICU).  A series of introductory didactic lectures is given in the first few months of each year to provide new residents with the basic principles of anesthetic management.

CA-2 (PGY-3)

The second year focuses on anesthesiology subspecialties. This includes cardiothoracic anesthesiology, obstetric anesthesiology, neuroanesthesiology, pediatric anesthesiology, pain management, critical care, regional anesthesia, and the post-anesthesia care unit.

CA-3 (PGY-4)

The final year consists of more advanced cases on largely elective rotations. Of note is a liver transplant rotation which is available at Baylor University Medical Center.  An optional six-month research track allows interested residents to participate in any of a wide variety of clinical research projects ongoing at UT Southwestern.
