The Pain Management Fellowship Program is designed to enable physicians to pursue academic and non-academic careers as specialists in Pain Management, certified by the American Board of Medical Specialists and subspecialty certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology.  The fellow will be affiliated with the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.  The fellowship is 12 months in duration and includes interventional, interdisciplinary, acute, chronic, and cancer pain management on an inpatient and outpatient basis.  Participation in a variety of research projects is encouraged, but not required.

The primary site for training is the Eugene McDermott Center for Pain Management (Pain Center), a prominent endowed center at UT Southwestern.  Facilities at the Pain Center are state of the art with dedicated fluoroscopy, pulse radiofrequency, and an operating room.  Additionally, the Pain Center has a dedicated gym for physical therapy and attractive space for clinicians, staff, and patients. Thousands of patients are treated each year for a variety of pain syndromes and age groups.  Outcome data one year following treatment continues to document marked improvement in pain and functioning as well as decreased healthcare utilization.

Fellows also rotate through the pain clinics at Parkland Health and Hospital System and VA North Texas Health Care System, presenting a widely diverse and comprehensive patient population for a thorough pain management experience.

Dr. Leland Lou is Director of the Eugene McDermott Center for Pain Management and oversees the Pain Management Fellowship Program.
