The Anesthesiology Patient Simulation Laboratory is used to train residents in acute crisis management and team leadership in a simulated operating room environment. Clinical scenarios are used to illustrate a variety of clinical challenges. Both during and following each scenario, the simulation can be stopped to allow discussion of pertinent teaching issues.
The program curriculum, developed by Dr. John E. Forestner, Professor of Anesthesiology and Pain Management, emphasizes aspects of anesthetic practice appropriate to various levels of training. Residents advance through instruction in anesthetic induction routines, detection and correction of machine malfunctions, airway adjuncts and difficult airway management, and, finally, advanced anesthetic crisis management.
