A series of introductory didactic lectures is given in the first few months of each year to provide new residents with the basic principles of anesthetic management. Departmental grand rounds occur every Wednesday morning and rotate between morbidity and mortality conferences, case discussions, guest speakers, faculty speakers, and journal club. Question and answer (Q&A) sessions, which are resident-driven and moderated by a faculty member, follow a major anesthesiology text and provide a comprehensive format for education. An anesthesia knowledge test (AKT) is conducted during the CA-1 year as a gauge for academic progress as well as a preparation for written boards. Mock oral exams take place four times a year. The mock exams are conducted in a manner that closely simulates the official oral board exam in order to provide strong preparation for the oral board exam. Problem-based learning discussions (PBLD), also resident-driven and faculty moderated, are not only an effective educational activity, but also function as a supplement to mock orals in preparing for the oral board exam. Additional didactic sessions occur during rotations at Children's Medical Center Dallas, VA North Texas Health Care System, Parkland Obstetric Anesthesiology, and during the Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology rotation.
