The Director of General Anesthesiology at Parkland Health and Hospital Systems is Dr. Babatunde O. Ogunnaike. The main operating suite has 18 operating rooms. More than 35% of the surgical patients are American Society of Anesthesiology classification 3 or higher, and more than 25% of the surgical cases are classified as emergency. More than 15,000 anesthetics are administered per year.
Dr. Philip M. Brown is the Director of Chronic Pain Services at Parkland. The Chronic Pain Service sees ambulatory referrals from family practitioner and specialist colleagues. A wide range of treatment options are offered, including specialist medication manipulations, physical interventions, and a multidisciplinary pain management program. Approximately 4,000 patients are seen each year.
The interim Director of Acute Pain Services (APS) is Dr. Leland Lou, Chief of the Division of Pain Management and Director of the Eugene McDermott Center for Pain Management. The APS service, established at Parkland, is gradually expanding to the entire University system. Goals of the APS are to 1) improve pain management of hospitalized patients, 2) educate residents in the techniques of acute pain management, and 3) direct clinical research in pain management. The Acute Pain Service also manages non-surgical pain such as severe trauma, multiple fractures, carcinomas, acute radiculopathies, chronic pancreatitis, and acute-on-chronic pain.
Dr. J. Elaine Sidawi is the Director of Obstetric Anesthesiology. More than 6,000 anesthetics are administered in the division of Obstetric Anesthesiology each year, and of the more than 16,000 deliveries each year, 45% are categorized as high-risk. In addition to clinical services, this division is also actively involved in research.
