The Rehabilitation Counseling Psychology program offers internship/practicum sites that allow students to do supervised fieldwork in a rehabilitation setting. The program is currently exploring additional opportunities that will provide students experience in this field.
The Eugene McDermott Center for Pain Management (UTSW):
The McDermott Center is located in Clinical Building I (the clinical building north of the Allied Health building) on the UT Southwestern campus. It is a private clinic run by the university with participation by faculty who have appointments in both Rehabilitation Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Anesthesiology, and Pain Management. Dr. Marty Deschner and Dr. Anna Wright Stowell are the supervising psychologists.
Students run approximately 5 psycho-educational group sessions per week and conduct initial psychological evaluations for patients considered for entry into the interdisciplinary pain program. Evaluations consist of a clinical interview and test battery. Results from the evaluations are written up and presented to the interdisciplinary team at regular staff meetings. Occasionally, patients will return for 1-2 follow-up counseling sessions.
HealthSouth:
Two settings are possible - the Day Hospital Program and the Outpatient Program. Cammie McAda, CRC, LPC, is responsible for the behavioral medicine programming at this site and will supervise students in this rotation, under the guidance of Dr. Gerald Casenave.
Day Hospital -
Patients attend various therapies between 3 to 5 times per week and may be seen for counseling about twice weekly. Many patients need psychological testing, though it is not expected a student will complete all testing. Opportunities are available to observe and learn additional neuropsychological testing, though this is not a main component of the program. Anticipate about three patients daily for individual counseling. Group therapy is held about three times per week. This may be educational or process based, it depends on the needs and level of the patients involved.
Fibromyalgia Outpatient program -
Participation in a Fibromyalgia treatment program is an option for students. It is also an interdisciplinary program. The program meets for eight weeks, twice a week, and many patients are also seen individually for counseling outside of the group sessions. This program is unique in the Dallas area. Individual sessions are also provided to chronic pain and depression patients. A new program starts every eight weeks, although some patients continue a few additional weeks for individual counseling. This program gives a good opportunity for students to learn about and have hands-on experience with short term counseling.
This is a true rehabilitation setting, as each patient faces a disability and adjustment to disability process. A unique part of the rotation is that a student can observe and participate in activities representing the private sector of healthcare and mental health. A student will learn about the relevance and importance of documentation that insurance companies require to show progress.
Psychological evaluations may be conducted in this setting, including the opportunity to learn additional test batteries not taught in the graduate program’s basic assessment course. Program development is ongoing at this site.
Adult Neuropsychology Service (UTSW):
Site Location: Neuropsychology Outpatient Service, Exchange Park Suite 265
Supervisors: Laura Lacritz, Ph.D. or Laurie Rilling, Ph.D.
Interns will learn to administer and score a battery of neuropsychological tests, and document clinical observations. Interns will sit in during clinical interviews and, depending on skill level and interest, obtain some interviewing and report writing experience. Interns will have opportunity to review cases with supervisor and sit in with feedback sessions with patients. Interns can attend weekly post-doctoral neuropsychology seminars and research meetings.
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Division (UTSW):
Site location: American General Tower , Exchange Park
Supervisors: Betsy Kennard, Psy.D. or Sunita Stewart, Ph.D.
Interns on this service will have the opportunity to participate in diagnostic assessments which typically include structured interviews. Structured clinical interview experience in additional research-based assessments would also be available. In addition, they may be involved in family assessment of patients with eating disorders on an inpatient unit or assessment and counseling of adolescents with diabetes. Case conferences on CBT cases and discussion of patient material with clinicians will also be available.
