Criteria Used in Evaluating and Selecting Applicants
The Admissions Committee uses a number of criteria in evaluating applicants:
-
High order intellectual abilities, with particular emphasis on those skills necessary for psychological research.
-
Good academic background, including psychology-related courses
-
Personal suitability for a career in clinical psychology, as evidenced by ability to relate to others, warmth, empathy, and a deep interest in psychological processes
-
Motivations, expectations, and career aspirations congruent with the nature of this program
-
Successful experience in psychology-related activities (clinical and research) in paid, volunteer, or trainee status.
Semi-finalist Group Evaluation Process
For the past several years, the Admissions Committee has conducted an all-day group evaluation process for the top 20 - 40 applicants. These are candidates who have been screened from the total pool of applicants using the above criteria and deemed to be the best match for the Program. During the group evaluation the candidates have opportunities to interact with faculty and students. The process includes activities where faculty and students share program information with applicants; applicants interact with faculty regarding issues arising from clinical case material and other psychologically relevant material; and applicants have opportunities for social interaction with current students and staff. A one-to-one personal interview is not required for an applicant to be given preliminary consideration although faculty are often willing to discuss the Program with individual applicants. With some exceptions, final selection of students is made from the group of applicants invited to the day-long visit.
Date for Interview
This year the interview will be held on Saturday, February 23rd. Expect to be here from 8-5 pm.
