An integral part of the program is clinical training, which provides the equivalent of a year's full-time internship following more than 1000 hours of practicum experience. Intensive supervision is emphasized in these clinical experiences. In order to achieve the goal of broad professional preparation, students will have a number of different clinical placements over the course of their practicum and internship assignments. Practica and internships are carried out in the UT Southwestern facilities, community agencies, regional facilities, specialized agencies, and area schools. Among the patient populations students may receive exposure to are:
- children, adolescents, and adults of various socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds
- inpatients in medical and psychiatric settings
- psychiatric and non-psychiatric outpatient populations
- neurologic and neurosurgical populations
The length of patient or client contact may vary from brief diagnostic or consultative evaluations and crisis intervention, to psychotherapy and extended follow up. In the fourth year, the student may elect, with the advice of the faculty and availability of resources, to emphasize a particular setting, patient population, or area of emphasis.
Consequently, the clinical experiences during this year will depend heavily on the student's qualifications and particular interests. Throughout the various clinical experiences, the student is supervised by both full-time and part-time faculty. Attempts are made to grade clinical work in complexity to meet the student's training needs.
Whereas the emphasis is upon broad clinical training, primary areas of emphasis include health/medical psychology, neuropsychology, and pediatric psychology.
