The curriculum is designed as a full-time, four-year program, including four summers of full-time work.

The Graduate Studies Committee for Clinical Psychology does not accept graduate credits obtained prior to admission.  It will, however, consider petitions from already admitted students to have particular required courses waived if there is clear evidence that the student has taken the substantial equivalent of such a course.

During the academic year, students may simultaneously be involved in classes, seminars, research apprenticeship, and clinical work. Summers are primarily devoted to research apprenticeship and clinical assignments which begin during the first summer and continue throughout the remaining three years.

Research apprenticeships are scheduled for the third and fourth years, for two days per week. Assignments are two and a half days per week during the fall and spring semesters and four days per week during the summer. Clinical experiences are offered in a wide variety of settings.

In addition, there are many other learning opportunities through workshops, seminars, conferences and Grand Rounds available across the Medical Center.  Although there are no required elective hours, students are encouraged to participate in electives, which are available through Psychology or other programs in the Graduate School or Medical School.  Students are given opportunities to provide input.  Elective courses may also be offered by the program based on need determined by the curriculum committee.

In addition, students may avail themselves to the academic resources of neighboring universities (e.g. The University of Texas at Dallas, Southern Methodist University, The University of Texas at ArlingtonUniversity of North Texas).  All offer a wide variety of educational experiences that are relevant to our students' education and training.

The curriculum of the Graduate Program has been an evolving one. In the didactic curriculum, the basic science material that is deemed to be required for identity as a psychologist is given priority. Basic courses and applied segments of the program are coordinated to ensure as much as possible the relevance of coursework for the student's future life as a clinician researcher. The clinical curriculum is designed to familiarize the student with a variety of theories, empirical research, techniques, and skills that are important in the practice of clinical psychology. Research and clinical activities are concurrent and integrated with coursework throughout the program.
