Candidacy is an official status within UT Southwestern's Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. It signifies that the faculty expect that the student will be successful in completing all degree requirements, and it permits the formation of the student's dissertation committee (at the appropriate time).
A student is eligible to be considered for candidacy for the Ph.D. after the completion of course work and clinical practica at the end of the fall semester of the second year. At that time, a qualifying examination is administered.
The Qualifying Examination assesses the student's ability to evaluate critically the psychological research literature. Qualification for candidacy is decided by assessment of the student's academic record, performance on the qualifying examination and the quality of performance on clinical assignments.
