"The Suede Vag"
UTSW students' custom, pinewood derby car entry for  the Vesalius Trust Auction

The UTSW Program showed their spirit during the Vesalius Trust Auction.
(Many thanks to TJ Fels' mom for the Indy cars)
And yes, there was an after-hours race in the hotel courtyard!

Vesalius Trust  Auction

Well, we didn't win this year, but our students and alumni showed great support and the most spirit of all the programs. Instead of auctioning off t-shirts, the academic programs each made a pinewood derby race car of their own design. Our program came up with the "Flaming Uterus" designed by Lew Calver and implemented by the second year students. At the auction, the students dressed as Indy racers with Lew at the helm helping them round up donations. Adam Questell made the high donation this year and will receive a limited edition print from Lew.

We also sponsored a custom Hotwheels racing competition. The competition amongst programs directors was close between Linda Wilson- Pauwels (Toronto) and Jim Perkins (RIT). In the end Jim Perkins took home the bottle of "milk".

        Thanks to all!

Ace of Hearts
Special mention should be made of the "Ace of Hearts" motorcycle custom designed by alumnus Keith Kasnot and Craig Foster. Keith and Craig gave a presentation on the design and production of their heart- themed motorcycle used for patient education with teens. They were kind enough to let people sit on their bike for photo opportunities - no riding though! Take a look at some photos one of the AMI participant's took of the "Ace of Hearts"

Alumni News

Phoebe Gloeckner awarded Guggenheim Fellowship

Alumna, Phoebe Gloeckner has been awarded a 2008 Guggenheim Fellowship. Gloeckner is currently an assistant professor in the School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan.

Gloeckner was awarded the fellowship for a graphic narrative about a Mexican girl murdered at the turn of this century in Ciudad Juarez, a major U.S.-Mexico border crossing adjacent to El Paso, Texas. Gloeckner developed a three-dimensional technique, teaching herself to use tools and to construct nearly everything she would normally draw
