Faculty members in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology provide comprehensive care for women with genital tract malignancies and related conditions or complications. Patients have access to the latest state-of-the-art clinical and laboratory diagnostic techniques and are treated with concern for nutrition, psychosocial adjustment, and pain control problems.
Division faculty have special expertise in pelvic reconstruction and in the rehabilitation of patients with complications from their cancers and/or treatments, including fistual repair, continent fecal and urine reservoirs, and vaginal reconstruction.
Therapeutic modalities include:
- Operative and staging endoscopy
- Radical and reconstructive pelvic and abdominal surgery
- Conventional chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and immunotherapy
- Radiation therapy
- Experimental therapies
Some women with known malignancies are invited to participate in special research-based patient-care programs. These include:
-
Family Cancer Registry to identify and evaluate women at risk for inheriting ovarian and other cancers.
-
NIH-supported Southwestern Trophoblastic Disease Center at UT Southwestern providing patient consultation and treatment for all types of pregnancy-related tumors.
All division faculty are members of the National Cancer Institute's Gynecologic Oncology Group, which sponsors numerous prospective phase I, II, and II clinical trials for virtually all gynecologic malignancies. In addition, industry-sponsored studies for selective patients are available for novel treatment strategies. Particular emphasis is given to the evaluation of new chemotherapeutic agents as well as to the application of new surgical techniques.
The Laboratory of Gynecologic Oncology is dedicated to the molecular biology of gynecologic cancers and is part of the Hamon Center for Therapeutic Oncology Research. Investigations conducted there include:
- Proteomic and microarray analysis of ovarian cancer
-
Novel biomarker development for ovarian cancer screening
-
Functional study of cervical carcinogenesis
-
Evaluation of the molecular biologic effects of chemotherapy
-
Identification of oncogenes and tumor suppressor gene
Members of the division have presented findings at the American Association of Cancer Research, Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and Society of Gynecologic Investigation.
