Gynecologic Oncology (08-07)

Externs choosing this elective rotation will function as student interns within the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at UT Southwestern. The service consists of a faculty member, a gynecologic oncology fellow, and four Parkland residents. Externs will be integrated into this team to provide care for all women diagnosed with gynecologic malignancies at our institution.

The gynecologic oncology team primarily manages all inpatient/outpatient chemotherapy, medical admissions, intraoperative consultations, postoperative complications, venous access procedures, and ICU patients. This busy clinical service provides a comprehensive clinical exposure for visiting students.

Externs will assist in providing care for a diverse, multiethnic population of both indigent and private practice patients. The inpatient care takes place entirely on-campus at Parkland Memorial Hospital (4-West),  University Hospitals - St. Paul and Zale Lipshy.

The outpatient experience occurs primarily at the Parkland Gynecologic Oncology Clinic where more than 100 women are seen each Tuesday.

Rare gynecologic tumors and challenging patient co-morbidities are commonplace. Externs are also encouraged to see private patients with faculty at the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Care Center.
Visiting students will gain experience in the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic cancers. He/She will assist in surgical procedures, see outpatients, and attend didactic conferences. In addition, externs will have the opportunity to share his/her fund of knowledge during daily ward rounds. This rotation provides an intense clinical experience with an emphasis on teaching.
