Obstetrics Service (08-14)

Visiting senior medical students will be assigned to the Parkland Memorial Hospital Obstetrics Service where 1200-1400 women are delivered each month.

The patient volume provides an outstanding clinical experience in the intrapartum management of complicated patients. Concurrently, externs have the opportunity to participate in numerous vaginal deliveries.

He/She will be on-call every 4th day for a 24-hour period and have the following day off after completion of rounds. The student will work primarily under the supervision of a 3rd-year resident.

Externs will be given progressively more responsibility during the rotation in performing uncomplicated vaginal deliveries and assisting in cesarean deliveries/tubal ligations.

Outpatient experience consists of regular participation in the OB Complications Clinic. This rotation provides an unparalleled exposure to all aspects of clinical obstetrics. Many uncommon or rare diagnoses are routinely managed.
