The pediatric neurology resident's primary goal is to complete clinical training in pediatric neurology to function as a pediatric neurologist while meeting the requirements for board certification in Neurology with Special Qualifications in Child Neurology from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

UT Southwestern offers a 5-year dual residency program which includes 2 years of ACGME-accredited residency training in Pediatrics at Childrens Hospital followed by 3 years of neurology training.  We also offer a 3-year advanced pediatric neurology fellowship for candidates that will have completed preliminary training in pediatrics elsewhere.

APPLICANT QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must have graduated from an approved American or Canadian medical or osteopathic school or hold permanent certification by the Qualification Board of the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or USMLE.
  2. Must be eligible for a Texas Physician-in-Training Permit.
  3. To start Child Neurology training, must have completed one of the three options of pre-requisite training:
    a.      Two years of ACGME-accredited pediatrics residency training in the United States or Canada (this is included in our dual residency program)
    b.      A preliminary PGY-1 year (as described in the Program Requirements for Residency Education in Neurology, Section I.A.1) and one year of residency training in Pediatrics; or
    c.      One year of Pediatrics plus one year of Basic Neuroscience training.

INTERVIEW AND MATCHING PROCESS

Like other Child Neurology programs, our department utilizes the San Francisco Match.  All applicants are required to go through SF Match.  Please visit the SF Match website (www.sfmatch.org) for information on submission and minimum criteria.  While we do not have a strict deadline for applications, we intend to finish interviews by December, 2008.

A 5-year dual-match is available for applicants interested in completing their two years of preliminary Pediatrics residency and 3 years of Child Neurology residency training at UT Southwestern.  Applicants must apply to the Pediatrics program via ERAS and Child Neurology via SF Match.  On both applications indicate that you are applying for the 5-year dual-match.  This will identify those applicants and help with coordination of interviews.  Although the pediatrics residency is guaranteed after a successfully match with pediatric neurology, applicants must participate in the pediatrics match through NRMP.

Child Neurology interview dates will take place October 2008 – December 2008.  Interviews will take place on Thursday and Friday, with pediatrics interviews on the Thursday and neurology interviews on Friday.  The interview includes paid lodging at a local hotel, interviews with faculty, facility tour, and a dinner with current residents in the program.

The Child Neurology division does accept International Medical Graduates (IMG), but typically only sponsors J-1 Visas.  IMG applicants must have ECFMG certification prior to applying to our program.

The Child Neurology division takes all information into account when considering resident candidates, including medical school grades, USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, research performance, extracurricular activities, and interview.  Currently, we offer three positions per year.
