DALLAS - April 15, 2005 - Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center are seeking patients to participate in medical studies on mood disorders in adults, men with benign prostatic hyperplasia and type 2 diabetes. All clinical trials are approved by UT Southwestern's Institutional Review Board, which reviews them for benefits, risks, side effects and informed consent.

Depression
Researchers in the mood disorders research program at UT Southwestern Medical Center are enrolling individuals, ages 18 to 65, in a pharmaceutical trial for the treatment of major depressive disorder. Participants must be drug-free and in stable medical condition; women must not be pregnant, lactating or planning on becoming pregnant during the study, scheduled to last for 14 weeks with the possibility of a 52-week extension. Male urinary discomfort
UT Southwestern Medical Center urology researchers are looking for men who suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), whose symptoms include slow urinary stream, hesitancy or frequency with urination, having to get up at night, or the feeling of not emptying completely. This study compares three methods of treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration. To qualify, patients must be at least age 50, have had no prior surgery for BPH and have not suffered a heart attack or stroke in the last six months. Type 2 diabetes
Patients, 18 years of age and older, who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes for at least one year and who are 18 years of age and older may participate in this UT Southwestern Medical Center clinical research trial. Eligible patients are those with A1c values between 7 percent and 11 percent, that have been on any oral anti-diabetic medication at either the maximum tolerated amount or the maximum dosage, or are currently taking insulin. Other criteria include medical history and current medications that will be evaluated by UT Southwestern doctors and nurses.
