A series of didactic and clinical activities are scheduled to fulfill the fellows' educational goals.  These include the Inpatient ID Consult rounds, lectures and conferences.  To ensure and monitor progress of the fellows during their clinical and research training, a mentoring, evaluation and feedback system has been set in place.

Infectious Diseases Consult Rounds - Fellows learn to function as  consultants under the supervision of an ID Attending who provides  didactic and bedside teaching.

Infectious Diseases Lectures and Conferences:

  • Weekly ID Case Conference and Monthly HIV Case Conference - Fellows prepare and present challenging and unusual patients as "unknowns" to an ID attending during the weekly ID Conference and the monthly HIV Case Conference.  The faculty then provides an in-depth discussion of differential diagnosis and management.  The fellow will follow this discussion with a prepared brief review of the relevant literature.
  • ID Didactic Core Curriculum - This is a didactic curriculum taught by ID faculty members once every other week. Lectures are also made available for review on CD to afford each fellow an opportunity to attend or review all of the core conference topics. It includes formal instruction in clinical infectious disease syndromes; HIV disease; the epidemiology, pathogenesis and clinical presentations of a variety of bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses; infection control; and anti-infective therapy.
  • ID Journal Clubs - Fellows and faculty will present both clinical and basic science journal clubs during which they critique a current journal article, and research the literature on the topic under discussion.
  • Research Seminars - Fellows and faculty present updates on their  research projects twice a year during the Friday ID conference.
  • Clinical Microbiology Rounds - Fellows meet weekly with the Director of Clinical Microbiology Laboratory to go over interesting specimens and cultures.
  • City-Wide ID Conference - UTSW adult and pediatric ID faculty and fellows, as well as ID practitioners from other institutions in Dallas present interesting cases followed by discussion and review of relevant literature.
  • Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology Course - Each fellow will either attend the Annual SHEA course or take the online Fellows Infection Control course jointly administered by the Infectious Disease Society of America and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.
