2007-2008 Financial Aid Application Instructions

Step 1: Complete as soon as possible all sections of the FREE Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) via the internet.  Students who received financial aid from a higher education institution during the 2006-2007 academic year should file their Renewal FAFSA from this same site by using your Personal Identification Number (PIN) that was previously sent by the U.S. Department of Education. (If you have misplaced your PIN, you may request another PIN via the internet at www.pin.ed.gov. Internet access to the FAFSA is at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. The results from the internet form are received more quickly.

NOTE:   You can have the FAFSA results sent to multiple institutions (UT Southwestern's code number is 010019).

The FAFSA is your official application for all need-based assistance at UT Southwestern. To complete this form you will need information from your (and your spouse's, if married) 2006 income tax return.

MEDICAL STUDENTS: You must provide parental information in the FAFSA if you want to be considered for institutional scholarships and some attractive, low-interest loans, without regard to your current financial relationship with your parents. (See Financial Aid Table in the "Guide" for programs requiring parental data.)  Although you will be considered financially INDEPENDENT throughout the financial aid process (being evaluated according to your own income, assets, and resources), providing this information will significantly increase your chances of being awarded these attractive resources.

NOTE: If you are a 1st-time applicant for financial aid at UT Southwestern, we recommend that you read Meeting College Expenses: A Guide for Seeking Financial Assistance before you attempt to complete the FAFSA.

Step 2: Shortly after submitting the FAFSA, the Office of Student Financial Aid will receive your processed information electronically.  The Office of Student Financial Aid will correspond with you regarding any required supporting documentation or missing forms.

TO BE GIVEN PRIORITY CONSIDERATION FOR FUNDING, YOUR PROCESSED SAR DATA SHOULD BE IN THE OSFA BY:

March 1 . . . . if you are an Allied Health or Graduate student
April 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . if you are a Medical student
Note:  1st year medical students have no firmly established deadline, but should understand that
the most attractive award resources are committed during April.

Be sure to complete your application at least 1 month before your priority date above.   A student admitted after these priority dates should apply immediately and will be eligible once the file is complete in the OSFA.

Step 3: You will receive an electronic award notification detailing your eligibility for financial aid, the package of funds you are awarded, and any related loan forms from the OSFA in mid-Spring. You should complete your award acceptance and file related forms within two weeks of that notification, or as soon as possible to complete the financial aid process and assure the timely receipt of all funds.

NOTE: The information you complete on the FAFSA is forwarded to UT Southwestern. With few exceptions, you are entitled on your request to be informed about the information UT Southwestern collects about you. Under Sections 552.021 and 552.023 of the Texas Government Code, you are entitled to receive and review the information. Under Section 559.004 of the Texas Government Code, you are entitled to have UT Southwestern correct information about you that is held by us and that is incorrect, in accordance with the procedures set forth in The University of Texas System Business Procedures Memorandum 32. The information that UT Southwestern collects will be retained and maintained as required by Texas records retention laws (Section 441.180, et. seq. of the Texas Government Code) and rules. Different types of information are kept for different periods of time.
