Student Tours of the Medical Center

STARS will custom-design tours of UT Southwestern Medical Center to fit the needs of the teacher.
The Tour Topic List contains a number of potential topics that may be explored during a visit.  See below to Download the file.

We welcome groups of all sizes (Max Limit 45), however those of up to 20 students allow us to provide a greater variety of  learning opportunities and activities.  Much larger groups will mainly be limited to more general tours and lecture presentations. Due to the high level of content during tours, we must limit students to grade 7 and above.

To schedule a tour, please call the STARS office at 214-648-9505 or email STARSmail@UTSouthwestern.edu and provide the information below.  There is a limit to the number of tours that we can schedule during the year, so call early (approx. 2 months in advance) to reserve a spot.

1. Three possible dates to schedule the tour
2. Time of arrival and departure
3. # of students attending tour (45 is the maximum number of students on tours)
4. Grade level of students
5. School name
6. School address
7. School phone
8. School fax
9. Teacher cell phone if used
10. Teacher e-mail
11. Student's level of science knowledge of topics requested
12. Science classes taken by students
13. Topics students are studying in class
14. Topics of interest by students (see attached topic list) - send by fax at 214-648-9508 or e-mail.
15. Goal of Tour:  Career Information and/or Science Enrichment?

Before tour please confirm:
1. Approval of tour date by appropriate school personnel
2. Schedule a substitute teacher for class if needed
3. Schedule bus for tour and give them directions to tour
4. Schedule chaperones for tour - 1 chaperone per 12 students (if possible)

The presenters are health care professionals and research scientists that voluntarily take time out of their busy schedule to share their profession with your students. The presenters have spent years earning their degree and studying the material they share. Please encourage your students to be respectful and courteous to them by listening attentively, answering questions, raising their hand to ask questions, and thanking the presenter at the end of the lecture/lab visit.
