Last month's Explorer Post meeting, Bob Daniels talked to us about prosthetics- orthotics. Daniels teaches 2.5 days a week, and does clinical work the other 2.5 days. We learned that prosthesis replaces an artificial body part. Orthotic braces the body part (bone, joint) so it can function again. Daniel says that prosthetics is an "instantaneous gratification." Prosthetists need to be open- minded and inventive. The jobs uses engineering, computer skills and artistic skills. Some of the best athletes and gold medal Olympic winners have prosthetic body parts. War was the motivation for development and growth of prosthetics.
