2001 Summer Research Program for Teachers

The STARS Summer Research Program gives science teachers and students an opportunity to work in a research environment.  During the summer of 2001, 13 secondary science teachers from around the state of Texas and 11 high school juniors from the Dallas ISD started an eight-week summer internship working in research laboratories on the UT Southwestern Campus and affiliated institutions. Under the guidance of a faculty host, participants complete a research project and present their findings at the end of the summer.

Internal Medicine
  Working with Jennifer Boedeker in lab of Nicola Abate, MD. in Internal Medicine. Studying the effects of elevated levels of plasmid fatty acids on glucose levels by infusing lipids into a human body, drawing blood, and checking the glucose and free fatty acid levels.   Working with Mike Heubschman in lab of Skip Garner, PhD. in the McDermott Center for Biochemistry and Internal Medicine. 3D TV. Creating 3D image with TI Technology and DLP (Digital Light Processing) to convert digital to holographic images. Pictures show him adjusting optical equipment.

  Working with Paul Chase in lab of Tony Babb, PhD. in Internal Medicine. Determining the respiratory exercise physiology mechanisms of human subjects during weightloss and comparing the differences between the subjects. Center for Basic Neuroscience
  Working with Felipe Espinosa, PhD. in lab of Rolf Joho, PhD. in the Center for Basic Neuroscience. Studying mice with knocked out potassium channels while finding the genotype of the mice using PCR and gel electrophoresis and comparing the metabolism and inhibitions of the mutant mice to normal mice; plus, injecting benzodiazepines in mice to study the effects of increased GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) release in order to find the molecular basis for electrical events in the brain and behavior.

  Working with Smina Khilnani in lab of Marlyn Mayo, MD. in Internal Medicine. Creating a DNA Bank for patients with primary biliary cirrhosis via the IRB (Institutional Review Board) process. Pictured checking on centrifuged cells and preparing to run a test.

Plastic Surgery
  Working in lab of Spencer Brown, PhD. in Plastic Surgery. Studying the effect of Staphlococcus aureus infection on the healing of bone tissue by culturing human osteoblasts and infecting them with this bacteria to measure the interleukin-8 levels.   Working with Tommy Hyatt in lab of Helen Hobbs, MD. in the McDermott Center for Molecular Genetics. Studying the genetics of hypercholesterolemia and coronary artery disease by finding the boundaries of exon mutations in the gene for cholesterol. Pictured preparing to run a gel.

Tagging lung and breast cancer cells with fluorescent markers to look for a specific gene's loss of heterozygosity and frequency.   Working with Elaine Coleman in lab of Ellen Vitetta, PhD. in the Cancer Immunobiology Center. Studying the effect of UV3, a monoclonal antibody, on the ability of a cancer cell to make angiogenic factors (produce blood vessels).

Internal Medicine
  Working with Nick Wolff and Susan Eliazer in lab of Robert Ilaria, MD. in Internal Medicine. Culturing breast cancer cells and treating them with STI 571, a drug shown to inhibit the autocrine cycle where the Ckit protein is involved and doing western blots to see how active these proteins are in the cells. Pictures show her culturing cells and lysating breast cancer cells in the centrifuge.

Psychiatry
  Working with Sherwood Brown, MD. in Psychiatry. Studying the link between asthma and depression in children by recruiting and surveying children from the asthma clinic. Also studying the side effect of a drug for depression that may cause a decrease in cravings for alcohol. Pictured analyzing data from her study.

Center for Basic Neuroscience
  Working with Aaron Didier in lab of Helmut Kramer, PhD. in the Center for Basic Neuroscience. Making mini-preps of constructs and transforming them into bacteria in order to discover more about the role of Hook2 proteins on the formation of aggresomes. Pictures show her running a gel, preparing her cultures, and creating preliminary constructs.
