The STARS Summer Research Program gives science teachers and students an opportunity to work in a research environment.  During the summer of 2000, 8 secondary science teachers from around the state of Texas and 12 high school juniors from the Dallas ISD and started an eight-week summer internship working in research laboratories on the UT Southwestern Campus and affiliated institutions. Under the guidance of a faculty host, participants complete a research project and present their findings at the end of the summer.

Linda Bourland
Weatherford High School
Host: David Margolis, M.D.
Internal Medicine
Linda Bourland, a teacher at Weatherford High School, works on a plasmid mini-prep in the laboratory of Dr. David Margolis, Associate Professor of Internal Medicine/Infectious Disease.  Linda's project involves the isolation of two fusion proteins, p68 and p78, that will be inserted into cells in culture as a way to determine the feasibility of such techniques in controlling the progression of HIV infection.
Judy Bullard
Crowley High School
Host: Padraig O'Suilleabhain, M.D.
Neurology
As part of a study on proprioception in Parkinson's patients, Judy Bullard of Crowley High School manipulates the arms of a subject in a specially-designed apparatus.  Her research host is Dr. Padraig O'Suilleabhain, Assistant Professor of Neurology.
Josh Dyniewski
Blalack Middle School, Carrollton
Host: Roger Schultz, Ph.D.
McDermott Center for Human Growth & Development
Josh Dyniewski, teacher at Blalack Middle School in Carrollton, works to purify mouse DNA engineered to contain a human chromosome.  He is working at the McDermott Center for Human Growth & Development in the laboratory of Roger Schultz, Ph.D.  Josh's project focuses on a determination of the cell cycle stage in which "mistakes" are made that lead to chromosome instability in Roberts syndrome.
Barry Ide
The Greenhill School, Addison
Host: Tony Babb, Ph.D.
Internal Medicine
At the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine, Greenhill School teacher Barry Ide (right) adjusts a Douglas bag during a VO2 test of pulmonary function.  On the cycle ergometer is Darren DeLorey, research assistant for Dr. Tony Babb, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine - Pulmonary Diseases.
Ricky Stover
Lewisville High School, North
Host: Jane Johnson, Ph.D.
Center for Basic Neuroscience
Working under the guidance of Dr. Jane Johnson in the Center for Basic Neuroscience, Ricky Stover looks over colonies of bacteria that he transformed.  The Lewisville High School - North teacher is inserting into a plasmid for cloning four copies of a promotor region for the math1 gene, which plays an key role in neural development.
Vashunda Williams
Naaman Forest High School, Garland
Host: Dean Smith, M.D., Ph.D.
Pharmacology
Checking the status of her Drosophila cultures, Vashunda Williams is working in the laboratory of  Dr. Dean Smith, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology, on a project dealing with fly olfaction.  Vashunda teaches at Naaman Forest High School in Garland.
Roxie Gaona
Health Science Magnet, Laredo
Host: Marlyn Mayo, M.D.
Internal Medicine
Roxie Gaona prepares a sample to run on an agarose gel.  She is working in the laboratory of Dr. Marlyn Mayo on a project to produce cDNAs to spot onto a microarray to investigate the liver disease, primary biliary cirrhosis.  Roxie teaches at the Martin Health Magnet in Laredo.

Kellye Levasseur
Mansfield High School
Host: Richard Scheuermann, Ph.D.
Pathology

Kellye Levasseur, teacher at Mansfield High School, pipettes a bacterial sample as part of a mini-prep to extract DNA.  She is working in Dr. Richard Scheuermann's laboratory to clone genes involved in the regulation of TNF-alpha.
