The vascular anomalies/laser fellowship in the Department of Plastic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center is a twelve month program with a level of training at a PGY6-8. The fellowship is under the direction of doctors A. Jay Burns and Jeffrey Kenkel. The fellow will have completed three to five years of general surgery training and two to three years of plastic surgery training before admission to this advanced fellowship. This program is designed to combine weekly didactic sessions in conferences with both clinical and operative experience. The fellow will spend time at Children's Medical Center as well as at UT Southwestern and Baylor Hospital Systems. They will be expected to participate in laser related clinics at UT Southwestern as well as Baylor University Hospital. They also will help manage a busy vascular anomalies clinic through Children's Medical Center once a week. During this clinic time, fellows will be taught how to evaluate problems that may be treated by lasers and become familiar with and utilize the state of the art laser technology. Laser safety will be taught and emphasized. The fellow will be responsible for participating in operative cases involving lasers and all vascular malformations. Additionally, the fellow will have dedicated time within the division of plastic surgery research. On completion of the fellowship, it is expected that at least one clinical and one basic science project will be submitted for publication.

In summary, the vascular anomalies/laser fellow will gain extensive exposure to the state of the art technology in cosmetic and reconstructive laser surgery. They will gain a better understanding of research projects related to lasers and become more comfortable presenting these works at local and national meetings.
