Plastic Surgery Teaching Conference

Each Thursday at 3 p.m. the Plastic Surgery Teaching Conference commences in the Plastic Surgery Library where cases are reviewed by the faculty and residents as a whole, followed by a "case of the week" presentation by a single resident.  This is followed by a formal teaching conference (lecture) every Thursday given by an attending, clinical faculty, visiting professor, or an attending from another service in the medical school.  There are two to three visiting professor plastic surgery lectures and a hand surgery visiting professor presentation given annually.

Research Conference

The department has active and ongoing research programs in its basic science and microvascular laboratories, where basic and clinical studies are coordinated by our Ph.D. Director of Plastic Surgery Research.  A departmental research meeting is held at 6 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month.  One clinical and one basic science article are required by each resident for completion of the residency.

Basic Sciences

The basic sciences are taught as an integrated part of the clinical training program and are given in regularly scheduled teaching conferences by specialists from other disciplines such as anatomy, pathology, biochemistry, physiology, etc., at 5:00 pm on Thursdays.

Resident Anatomy

An Annual Resident Anatomy/Clinical Correlation seven-week course is conducted with tutorial attending participation.  Fresh cadaver dissections of major soft-tissue flaps, hard-tissue osteotomies of the head and neck, upper extremity, trunk, and lower extremity procedures are demonstrated in the unique laboratory experience.

Hand Conference

Hand Conference is held every Monday morning from 7-8 a.m. in conjunction with the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.

Skin Tumor, Breast, Head and Neck Conferences

At Baylor University Medical Center there are conferences on skin tumor, breast, and head and neck scheduled throughout the week and that are attended by the plastic surgery resident.

Plastic Surgery Journal Club

Plastic Surgery Journal Club is scheduled once a month. Each resident is assigned current journals for review and presentation, followed by discussion with faculty and residents.

Head and Neck Conference
A Head and Neck Conference is held the 1st, 3rd and 5th Thursday at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Dallas. Residents review head and neck tumor cases with faculty.
