Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about losing weight. Previously, we discussed losing weight overall to reduce the belly fat that increases heart disease risk. Reducing portion sizes and making better food choices is key to weight loss. Another key is exercise, and it doesn’t have to be intense or elaborate to make an impact.

Dr. Linda Michalsky, a nutrition expert at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says one way to fight the bulge is to take a walk. After dinner, go for a brisk walk. You can even turn it into a social occasion by walking with friends or your family and talking as you walk. This is a great strategy for dealing with family meals during the upcoming holiday season. Instead of hanging around picking at leftovers or getting second helpings of dessert, gather the family and go for a walk.
