Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.
This week on Health Watch, we’ve been talking about looking younger or better. For people who want to improve their appearance, cosmetic surgery offers a variety of options. But you should remember that plastic surgery is still surgery. It’s an invasive procedure that carries with it the same risks as any other surgery.
Dr. Rod Rohrich, chairman of plastic surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says you need to do your homework when you’re considering plastic surgery. Research surgeons, their qualifications, their experience and their areas of expertise. Your surgeon should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Talk to the surgeon about what you hope to achieve. The surgeon should be honest with you about what results are reasonable to expect. Making major changes can require multiple procedures. There’s no one magic trick that will instantly make you look like a different person.
