Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

The current economic situation has made many of us look for ways to save money. This week on Health Watch, we’ll talk about eating nutritiously on a budget, whether you’re cutting back because you’ve lost your job or because you want to save money to be ready for tough times.

Dr. Jo Ann Carson, a registered dietitian at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says one of the best ways to save money on food is to be organized. Plan meals, make a shopping list and then stick to your list. It also helps to shop less often. On each shopping trip, you’re likely to pick up a few extra items, so fewer trips mean fewer extras. Another tactic to consider is shopping in your own pantry, especially if you need to cut spending to tide you over between jobs. There are usually a lot of staples in the cupboard, and a little creativity can turn them into meals without buying a lot of extra items.
