Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

Spring has begun, and this week on Health Watch, we’ll offer some advice on approaching some springtime traditions. Now that the weather is warmer, kids may start participating in outdoor sports. Sports are a major cause of injuries in children and teens, but many of these injuries could be prevented with proper equipment.

Dr. Luis Palacios, a sports medicine expert at UT Southwestern Medical Center, says children participating in sports should always wear protective gear, and the gear should be the right size and fit well. Athletes should stretch and warm up properly before playing. Adults should supervise practices and games, and players shouldn’t be encouraged to shake off injuries or play through pain. Athletes should stay hydrated by drinking either water or a sports drink before and during activity.
