Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’ve been talking about New Year’s Resolutions — which ones to make and how to keep them. Resolutions may be aimed at improving your own life, but they can also benefit others.

Dr. Ravi Sarode, a pathologist and blood bank expert at UT Southwestern Medical Center, suggests that people make a New Year’s resolution to give blood at least twice a year. There’s always a need for blood and blood components, so regular donors are essential. To help yourself remember, schedule your blood donations for the year now, and link your planned donations to memorable dates such as your birthday, wedding anniversary or some other event that you won’t forget. You can donate either whole blood, plasma or platelets. With one blood donation, you can help as many as four people.
