Health Watch is a Public Service of the Office of News and Publications  and is intended to provide general information only and should not replace the advice of a medical professional. You should contact your physician if you have questions about any of these topics.

This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about survival tips for all the holiday havoc. For those watching their waistlines, the holiday feast buffet can be a big obstacle. Dr. Linda Michalsky, a nutrition expert at UT Southwestern Medical Center, has a few buffet strategies:

Try adding movement to your meal — walk a few laps around the buffet table before filling or refilling your plate, or move your post-meal chat outside for a walk-and-talk session. Wait 15 or 20 minutes before going back for seconds. You may find you’re not as hungry then. Take smaller than normal portions of everything except your favorite dish, and cut dessert servings in half. Use smaller plates, or try to keep parts of the plate visible if you have to use a larger plate. Sit as far away from the buffet table as possible to eat, so you’re less tempted. If you’re a guest and asked to bring a dish, bring something low-calorie that you like.
