This week on Health Watch, we’re talking about how going green with your diet can be good for both your body and the planet — and that doesn’t mean just eating spinach and broccoli! Nutrition experts at UT Southwestern Medical Center say a doggy bag is a good way to avoid waste and to trim your waist.

When you eat out, most portion sizes are way too big. Instead of wasting the food, carry it home to eat for another meal. The same goes for when you prepare too much food at home. Reheated leftovers are a good alternative to a fast-food lunch. In addition to avoiding overeating and waste, that can save you money, and home-cooked or quality restaurant food is better for you than fast food. Many leftovers can also be repurposed into other meals, such as soups, stews or salads. You can also avoid waste by only buying and preparing what you know you can use.
